Electric Panel Upgrade & installation Service

Often called a “heavy up” in the electrical world, an electric panel upgrade goes hand in hand with electrifying your home, going green, and otherwise increasing the safety and technology needs in your home.

Whether you’re installing heat pumps, cutting the gas cord, installing EV chargers, going solar, or if you just need more power, we’ve got you covered.

why get an electric panel upgrade?

The Washington DC area has a rich history, and with that comes many homes built decades ago, and sometimes over 100 years ago or more.

With that, the electrical panels are not only old and potentially dangerous, but there was need for much less total power back then. These days we have a need for much more amperage in the average home, especially as we all go greener, move away from gas, and move towards netzero and full home electrification.

This is where the electrical panel upgrade, or “heavy up” comes into play. We can update your old electrical system and bring more power into your home to power all these cool new gadgets, including your new EV car.

Electric panel upgrade needs

When will I need an electric panel upgrade?

While some homes won’t need an electric panel upgrade with some home electrification projects, some certainly will due to just not having enough juice. Here are some reasons why you may need one:

  • You just bought a new EV car and you want to install a fast charger in your garage or on site. These often need 50 or 60 amp breakers, which some panels cannot handle until we upgrade.
  • You’re looking to save energy and move away from natural gas, but the new heat pump systems (water heater and HVAC) are electric, not gas. We may need more power to power these if the current electric panel can’t handle it.
  • If you’re taking advantage of the amazing solar incentives in DC, you may need a bigger panel, but it often depends on other projects going in at the same time.
  • If you’re doing a home renovation and need to update your home to current electric code.
  • If you just need more power for fun stuff, like a new hot tub or home addition!

did you know?

Solar is fantastic in the DC area, but coupled with energy efficiency projects, it’s even better.

When combined with low-hanging-fruit projects like energy audits, air sealing, insulation, heat pump water heaters, heat pump HVAC systems, EV chargers, panel upgrades, and more, we can often take your home’s energy usage down by 20-30% before any solar is needed.

We love designing full net zero and home electrification systems for you that save money and just make sense. And by combining these above mentioned projects, we can often save you a lot of money while increasing comfort, home value, and your overall quality of life at the same time.

Air Sealing and Insulation Service

Insulation and air sealing goes hand in hand with saving energy with your solar system. The fact is, all these projects tag-team off of each other. With a less leaky home that has better air management and insulation, your home uses less energy and can be healthier at the same time. This leads to energy and maintenance savings, along with longer system lifetimes.

Done together, we can save energy across the board. It also starts with a good energy audit, which we suggest doing also.

FAQ

do you have a question about Electric panel upgrades?

We’ll try to answer the most common ones here, but if you don’t find your answer, please reach out!

It totally depends on your specific home, but it can range from a few thousand to over $10,000, depending on what is needed. These can be involved projects, and we’re working with very high voltage and a lot of electrical components and wiring. Contact us for more details on your specific home.

We sure do! You can fill out our Contact Form here or give us a call. The more detail the better so we can save you time, and we may not even need to go out to your home if we have your address.

Yes indeed. We’ll need to visit your home for an initial info-gathering session with a quick overview of the house, electrical panel, and your overall needs, but that’s it! We permit, design, and install for you after that, so you can get back to more important things.
