Manual J load calculations for your heat Pump Installation

Did you know that when you don’t perform a Manual J heating and cooling load calculation along with your new heat pump HVAC, you’re basically just guessing on the size you need?.

This is because a Manual J is the ACCA approved engineering and building software that uses precise energy modeling to model your exact home. We do these as part of every heat pump installation project we do, and offer this service independently as well.

what is a manual j?

A Manual J calculation and report is the name of the heating and cooling load energy modeling done when installing new HVAC equipment. In our case, that means heat pumps.

To size a system correctly, all heat pump system or HVAC replacements, big renovations, and new home builds should include a Manual J calculation. If they don’t, it’s just guessing.

Why is a manual j so important for your new heat pump installation?

As mentioned above, without an ACCA approved energy model for your specific home’s heating and cooling calculations, we just don’t know what size to put in. Here are some benefits of a Manual J calculation:

  • More Comfort: A correctly designed HVAC system means it’s sized specifically to your home.
  • Lower Potential Utility Bills: It’s estimated that 30-40% of homes have an oversized HVAC system, which only costs you more money.
  • More Affordable Up Front Cost Potential: Oftentimes once we run the correct sizing for you, the system size can actually be less than what typical HVAC companies want to sell you.
  • System Longevity: When a system can run the way it’s designed to, that means less maintenance costs and longer lifetimes.
  • Typically Required For Permits and Rebates: The rebates can be very strict on sizing, heat pump efficiency. Oftentimes they require a Manual J calculation regardless, and so does the permit department.

did you know?

Did you know that Washington DC is considered the best solar market in the country? Not only is there a 30% federal uncapped tax credit, but DC has an incredible SREC program for customers. This program pays you yearly for your renewable energy production which is purchased by commercial and public organizations to meet the DC renewable energy generation requirement put into legislation through the year 2041.

If you haven’t looked into solar yet, that’s a great project to include into your netzero and home electrification total home plan that we offer.

We love designing full net zero and home electrification systems for you that save money and just make sense. And heat pump HVAC installations are a big part of this overall holistic energy planning.

Air Sealing and Insulation Service

Insulation and air sealing goes hand in hand with saving energy with your HVAC system, whether it be new or old. The fact is, all these projects tag-team off of each other. With a less leaky home that has better insulation, the HVAC system is able to work less. This leads to energy and maintenance savings, along with longer system lifetimes.

Done together, we can save energy across the board. It also starts with a good energy audit, which we suggest doing also.

FAQ

do you have a question about our Manual J service?

We’ll try to answer the most common ones here, but if you don’t find your answer, please reach out!

Manual J calculations mostly depend on the complexity of the report, such as block load or room by room, home size, and other factors. Typically it can range from a few hundred to over one thousand dollars.

We sure do! You can fill out our Contact Form here or give us a call. The more detail the better so we can save you time, and we may not even need to go out to your home if we can do a video call or have a few pictures.

Once you have the ACCA approved Manual J report, you can use it for permitting, rebate requirements, figuring out what heat pump or mini split equipment you’ll install, and otherwise you can rest easy knowing that you’re installing the right size HVAC system.
